by Office of Marketing | Aug 28, 2013

The VFCC Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of two new head coaches, Tom Pierson and Robert Spaid.

Tom Pierson is the new coach for the men’s baseball team. Pierson has nearly 20 years of experience on and around the baseball diamond. He started his early coaching career as head baseball coach in the Radnor-Wayne Little League. From there he went on to coach and hold a board member position within the Catholic Youth Organization of Trooper, Pa. Additionally, he helped various clinics in the surrounding area. More recently, Pierson was an athletics coach at the Renaissance Academy in Phoenixville, Pa.

Pierson is no stranger to Patriot Athletics; he has served as the assistant coach for the women’s soccer team since 2007. While he will still be an assistant coach for the women’s soccer team, Pierson is excited to make the transition over to men’s baseball. “I’m excited to get back onto the baseball field and begin instilling the passion of the game into the players,” Pierson explained. “I want to see these young men grow beyond the wins and losses and what is happening on the field. I want to see their character and their skills develop.” VFCC looks forward to seeing the accomplishments of the men's baseball team under Coach Pierson's leadership.

The VFCC Department of Athletics is also pleased to announce the hiring of Robert Spaid as Head Women’s Softball Coach. Spaid is a 2004 graduate of King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. He later earned a Master Degree in Science Administration in Sports Administration from West Chester University in 2006. In addition to coaching softball, Spaid is entering his fifth year as head Athletic Trainer for VFCC.

Having spent a season with the VFCC softball team as a volunteer assistant in 2012 and as an assistant coach in 2013, this will be Spaid’s first experience coaching a collegiate softball program. Spaid was previously an assistant coach for the varsity boys lacrosse team at Pottsgrove High School during the 2005-2006 academic year while interning as a graduate assistant in sports administration. During his undergraduate years, Spaid played varsity men’s lacrosse and club ice hockey at King’s College.

“I am looking forward to this upcoming season, not only to challenge the women to excel on the softball field, but in the classroom and most importantly in their walk with the Lord," said Spaid. "We have a strong core of returning players who are excited to be a part of VFCC athletics this year and I am looking forward to meeting some new faces who will bring new skills to the field. This year will be a challenging...and I welcome this challenge and am excited to begin this new chapter in my journey."
