CRIMINAL JUSTICE MAJOR AND MASTER OF ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP AMONG NEW PROGRAMS TO LAUNCH BY VALLEY FORGE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
PHOENIXVILLE, Pa, March 4, 2014—Valley Forge Christian College is pleased to announce the launch of seven new undergraduate degrees and one graduate degree, beginning in the fall of 2014. The degrees include Criminal Justice, Sports Management, Digital Media Graphic Design, Digital Media Web Design and Development, Middle Level (4-8): English/Language Arts and Reading (Public and Private Certification), Deaf Culture Studies, Online Business Administration and a Master of Organizational Leadership.
The College is expanding its current program offerings by establishing new majors that meet the needs of its students. These degrees will prepare students with the skills and knowledge needed to develop and sustain a unique competitive advantage in an increasingly complex marketplace. The majors will complement the current undergraduate and graduate offerings at Valley Forge Christian College.
"We are constantly looking for new ways to create additional opportunities for our current and future students," said Dr. Kevin Beery, Vice President of Academic Affairs. "There is tremendous demand for professionals in these fields. Students were asking for these majors and we listened."
Dr. Don Meyer, President, sees these steps as a further demonstration of the College’s commitment to the value of the liberal arts and sciences programs, and their capacity to support these programs through the integration of faith and learning. "It is a momentous opportunity that we have as an institution to offer new majors that will prepare our graduates to serve Christ in these fields. With an increase from seven majors in 1996 to 67 in the fall of 2014, we have seen a genuine growth that is furthering our mission to prepare individuals for a life of service and leadership in the church and in the world," said Meyer.
Dr. William Clarkson, Business Department Chair, knows first-hand the amount of work that went into making this a reality. "Our faculty and administration worked relentlessly to launch these majors in time for the fall semester. We have eager faculty ready to teach eager students, and you can feel that excitement when you step foot on our campus."
The Master of Organizational Leadership (MOL) will be a hybrid program that includes online classes and two one-week cohort meetings per year to accommodate working adult schedules. The MOL program is designed as a framework of organizational systems to not only improve, but fully develop students as leaders with emphasis in team building, strategic planning and management, biblical values and business ethics, creative thinking, negotiation and conflict resolution.
Through the MOL program, students will acquire the skills necessary to effectively lead organizations, understand the dynamics of global and multi-cultural environments, organizational behavior, strategic thinking, budgeting, financial management and risk management for organizational decision-making, and demonstrate effective use of technology and processes for feedback, performance assessment, problem-solving and improving organizational processes.
The undergraduate online Business Administration major provides a comprehensive foundation to develop business knowledge and skills. It combines the fundamentals of finance, marketing, strategic management and communication. The convenient and flexible online format prepares students to meet the challenges of a high-tech, global marketplace through critical thinking and leadership skills.
The Criminal Justice major will prepare students for a challenging and rewarding career. They will learn about the causes of criminal behavior and society's response to crime, law enforcement, the court system and security, illegal drugs and alcohol, gender and race, mental health, laws, practices and ethics, forensics and intelligence. The program offers a foundation in criminal law, legal procedures and criminal evidence. Areas of study include the courts and corrections, homeland security, terrorism, cybercrime and criminology.
The newly created Sports Management bachelors degree will equip students with the professional experience to explore occupations from athletic management, marketing and sales, to public relations and many more. The program will prepare students to lead and promote sports organizations, produce major sporting and entertainment events and teach stadium and facility management. Students will acquire essential industry knowledge and leadership skills, as well as learn about diverse aspects of the sports industry, including legal and ethical issues, finance and economics, organizational strategy, psychological aspects of sports and exercise, brand strategy, promotions and advertising campaigns, and the fitness industry. Students will also experience field work, research, and an extensive internship in the industry to fully prepare them to enter the workforce upon graduation.
The Digital Media Graphic Design undergraduate major will study in-depth design trends and theories, using industry-specific software to help students learn and create a wide variety of media products. Classes cover theories of aesthetics and communication, as well as the workflow processes involved in creative project management. The major will allow students to develop, analyze and refine creative concepts from initial idea to final product. Digital Media Graphic Design students are also cross-trained in areas such as photography and video production for maximum versatility in the field.
The Digital Media Web Design and Development undergraduate major will teach students the tools and technology needed to understand the language of web design and how to take that knowledge into a professional career creating a variety of interactive web content. Coursework explores identifying a target audience, aesthetic design, and project and client relationship management. Students will learn to concept, code and publish their own standards-based content for a variety of formats, incorporating the latest design ideas, languages, technology and features in order to develop a well-rounded skill set.
The Middle Level (4-8) Reading/English Language Arts - Public and Private Certification programs are designed to equip and prepare teacher candidates with the content knowledge and pedagogical skills necessary to excel as teachers of middle level (grades 4-8) instruction in public and private schools. A non-certification option is also available for students who do not wish to pursue state certification. Students will engage in learning experiences that are tailored to the specific characteristics of the adolescent learner, aligned with Pennsylvania academic standards, focused on current theory and best practices, and supported by a Christian worldview.
The Deaf Culture Studies undergraduate major is designed to prepare students to work or minister alongside in the global Deaf Community. This major is for non-Deaf students to learn American Sign Language levels I-IV, genres of ASL, history of the Deaf community, sociological aspects of Deaf education and provide students with the linguistic and cultural tools necessary to succeed in this unique cross cultural community. Faculty will prepare students in the areas of American Sign Language skills and the intricacies of the American Deaf Community in order to serve as a bridge between society's major community and this language people group.
These new bachelor's and master's degree programs have been developed to meet the needs of the changing marketplace and prepare students with the necessary skills for professional careers upon graduation.
