Ministry in a Furniture Store

If someone would have told Dan Mortensen '05, a Church Music major with an incredible talent for piano, that he would become the Regional Sales Trainer of Raymour and Flanigan, he would have laughed politely and gone back to his keyboard.

Following God's leading, a month after his graduation from Valley Forge Christian College, Dan got married and moved to Nazareth, Pennsylvania to take a music pastor position at Carpenter's Community Church. A year later, he transitioned to Family Life Community Church in Bangor, Pennsylvania to serve as the music pastor there.

Ready for a change, and desiring some business experience so he could become more well rounded, he applied for a Sales Associate position at Raymour and Flanigan, a large northeastern furniture chain. After just seven months, he was promoted to Sales Manager, and three months later moved up to Showroom Manager. Two months after his last promotion, he was offered a Regional Sales Trainer position, which gives him the responsibility of training any new associates within the greater Philadelphia market. This market includes 28 stores in three states, in which he teaches classes in the company's university center and travels to each of the stores to provide training and development for the company.

Dan knows that God is using him. As a trainer, he has a unique opportunity to talk with people on a personal level, conversations that wouldn't have opened up on the sales floor. He knows, too, that the most significant impacts are the ones we don't even know we're making.

Dan still practices piano as much as he can, knowing that God has a special plan for his talent. In the meantime, he recently obtained his pilot's license and is now working on a commercial license. One of his favorite things to do is to fly his wife, Lauren (Petersen) '05 Mortensen and four-year-old son, Kellen, on day trips.
