Six weeks after the start of the 2014–2015 school year, the men's basketball team will begin meeting in their practice jerseys and preparing for five months of competition. With expectations and hopes high for the Patriots, the athletic department has released the men's basketball schedule to give fans a preview of the coming season.
The Patriots will open their season on the road at the Optimist Classic, taking place at Salisbury University (Maryland) from Nov. 15–16. On opening day, the men will face Dickinson College, which was a 2014 NCAA Division III Elite 8 team with a record of 27 wins and only six losses. Dickinson returns with their entire squad, including NCAA Division III First Team All-American Chris Cox, which means that this first game will be an excellent test for the Patriots!
The UVF men return home for the annual Holiday Inn Express Tip-Off Classic. During the tournament the men will face off against Kuyper College (Michigan), Trinity Baptist College (Florida) and Johnson University (Tennessee).
In December the team travels to Gallaudet University, in the nation’s capital, for the fourth consecutive year to close out the calendar year at the Holiday Tournament. To be a top contender, they will have to play their best against Alfred State College, Maryland Bible College and Seminary and Gallaudet University. After Christmas break, the team returns to UVF, ushering in the new year with a bout against Rowan University on Jan. 3.
UVF will go up against rival Lancaster Bible College (LBC) on Jan. 15 for a rematch of the 2014 East Region Championship. The Chargers are certain to be ranked in the NCCAA Division II Top 5 during the preseason, after being the NEAC regular season champions last year and finishing in third place at the 2014 NCCAA Division II National Tournament.
February opens up with a week of home games. McDaniel College, who achieved an undefeated regular season last year, will come to Phoenixville on Feb. 2 to face our Patriots. The men then finish the stretch in a competition with fellow East Region competitor Cairn University on Feb. 9; this game, the men’s final home appearance during the regular season, will also be Senior Day here at UVF.
Before competing in the NCCAA Division II East Region Tournament, the Patriots will play their last regular season game on Feb. 21 at Central Penn College. The latest meeting of these two teams ended in a white-knuckle, nail-biting overtime victory for the Patriots, defeating Central Penn by a score of 113–112.
The men’s basketball team will look to capitalize on last year’s successful campaign and learn from their losses, in pursuit of the East Region title and their ninth straight NCCAA II National Championship Tournament appearance. The athletics department is calling on fans to show up in support of the Patriots at all of these exciting home games.
