Thanking Those Who Give So Much

by Sarah Cushing - Office of Marketing | Sep 30, 2015
Once again, the U.S. MAPS RV (Mission America Placement Service Recreational Vehicle) Volunteers, an AG ministry that helps to construct and renovate church buildings and other AG-affiliated facilities, were a major presence this summer at UVF. The ministry is led at UVF by Dave and Linda Maracle who come year after year to help the university fulfill its mission in a quiet but impactful way. Dave describes the ministry as “one of the best-kept secrets in the Assemblies of God.”
The Maracles began volunteering at UVF during their summer vacation 12 years ago, and after Dave retired in 2008, began to spend their entire summer on the Phoenixville campus. “We’re thrilled to be here,” Linda said. “We would stay forever if we could.” From commencement in May to the first chapel of the academic year in late August, Dave and Linda live on the UVF grounds in a 42-foot motorhome.
The RVers, 14 in all plus a church group from Texas, worked with the Sodexo maintenance crew on several campus improvement projects and renovations, while another team offered its services to the offices in the Harrup Administration building. In addition, five church groups from New York, Ohio and Connecticut came to UVF over the course of the summer. The hours dedicated by the volunteers — a total of 1,584 hours — and the skills they shared were largely spent improving the residence halls. The efforts included pulling up old carpets, replacing vanities and cabinets in bathrooms, painting and constructing new porticoes over entrances. Another project included the construction of a laundry facility in one of the buildings.
These projects, along with others completed in 2015, were all completed with teamwork. Dave described the effort of the RVers saying, “We helped to offset some of the projects that needed to be done so that UVF’s facilities team could work on the more critical projects.” He continued, “This way, they do part of the job and the volunteers do part of the job. We work together.” All of these behind-the-scenes improvements made a significant difference in the buildings and rooms occupied by students.
Linda spent her last full day of work at the front desk in the Harrup Administration building. She greeted the new students and welcomed back returning students — something she looks forward to each year. When asked why she keeps coming back every summer, Linda answered with a wide smile, “I love this university. We want to do everything we can to help it.”
