On Feb. 8, 2016, University of Valley Forge (UVF) freshman Jhanel Brown, a student in the Sports Management program, was named “Student Athlete of the Week” by the NCCAA National Office for the second week in a row. What is even more impressive is that this is the third time this season Brown is receiving the distinguished honor.

On Feb. 4, the Patriots played against Cedar Crest College. The final score of the game was 67-41, bringing the Patriots’ winnings for the year to 10-9. Brown’s success during this game highlighted her determination and drive. Breaking her previous record of 25 rebounds in one game, Brown finished with a total of 30 points, 3 blocks and an impressive 34 rebounds.

“As an athlete, this achievement tells me that I can do anything if I put my mind to it,” says Brown. Before she came to UVF, she was a student athlete at her high school, being named Most Valuable Player, Student Athlete of the Year and Most Improved Player of the Year. When she joined the Patriots, Brown did not expect to beat her high school record of 30 rebounds. It is because of her improvement as an athlete that Brown says, “With God on my side, I can succeed in all that I do. When people see me, I want them to think, ‘Wow, she’s got God with her and she’s proud of it.’” As Brown continues to shine with a passion for Christ on and off the court, she is cheered on by her teammates, friends and coaches.

UVF women’s basketball head coach, Gretchen LeVan, loves to see the success of both Brown’s high achievements this season and the women’s basketball team’s accumulated success. She says of Brown, “She has excelled at the net all year.”

Indeed, within the NCCAA Division II, Brown has proven to have the most rebounds per game all yearlong. Brown’s points are noteworthy as well. For the season, she is averaging 17.2 points per game, 14.9 rebounds and has recorded double doubles in 14 games out of 19 total. As the basketball season continues to progress, Patriots fans are eager to cheer Brown and the women’s basketball team onward to victory.
