Treat Yourself Well

Treat Yourself Well

The only way we’re going to survive all these classes, homework assignments, and fun events is by treating ourselves when we can. Unfortunately, we’re generally not super equipped to do so. We’re on deadlines and budgets, and it’s not so easy to let loose. Here’s some small ways you can make every day a little better and make it to tomorrow!

  • Have a fully stocked candy bowl
With tiny chocolates available to you, you can indulge and take a breath whenever the weight of the world becomes a little too heavy to shoulder. This isn’t just a treat for your tastebuds – eating chocolate releases endorphins in your brain. You’ll actually feel happier!

  • Give yourself a break
I don’t mean 11 seconds to check Facebook. I do mean: treat yourself to a full movie or series binge-watching, read an entire book just for fun, take a whole day off to do something you’ve been wanting to do for a while (NOT laundry), or even just sleep in for an extra hour on the weekend. You’ll feel rejuvenated and ready to get back to work; especially if you do it often. Finish an assignment? Watch an episode of your favorite sitcom. Ace a test? Hang out with friends! Survive through six days? That’s reason enough to take the seventh for yourself.

  • Dress up (or down)
When you look good, you feel good. Walking out of your dorm in the morning knowing you look great gives you a boost of self-confidence, and you can strut through life like a champ. Alternatively, a day in sweats can be just the comfort you need to help you through a due date-heavy week!

  • Say yes!!
Allow yourself one extra yes per week! It could be to anything that makes you happy: buy something from your Amazon cart, have seconds on ice cream (or have ice cream for dinner), go to an event on or off campus, or wear slippers instead of shoes to your morning class! Knowing you have that little indulgence every week will give you something to look forward to, as well giving you some bonus good feelings during the week. Keep it within your means, of course, but make a point of doing something every week!

Treating yourself comes down to allowing yourself to enjoy things – which is pretty hard to do in a productivity-valuing culture. Train yourself to recognize that those moments don’t need to be stolen, they’re productive too (for your health and spirit!), and take advantage when you can. Peace out, fam.
